Thousands of Peoples
Democratic Party (PDP) members loyal to Rt. Hon. Rotimi Amaechi in Oyibo Local
Government Area have now defected to the All Progressive Congress (APC).
The group led by the
chairman of the council, Felix Nweke at a rally at the council’s secretariat
said the defection is in solidarity with Governor Rotimi Amaechi’s leadership
style.
He also said that the
decision to move to APC was informed by the lack of confidence in the present
PDP.
“In party politics you
must have a platform. You cannot remain where you are not wanted: a place where
commissioners are suspended, governors are suspended, party faithfuls are
suspended.
“If you remain
suspended till 2015, how will you exercise yourself? You must have a platform to
tell people that I am here, to contest all the election and win,” Nweke said.
The Rivers State
Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Dr Nabs Imegwu also said PDP has become
uncomfortable for members of the party in Oyibo, hence the decision to defect
to the APC.
“We took into
consideration the fact that we have exhausted and exploited all possible avenuesfor
resolution of issues, taking advantage of provisions of the constitution of
PDP.
“We did all of those,
hoping and waiting patiently believing that some-day, some measures of sense
and reason will prevail and issues will be treated on the basis of their legal
strength but non-of those was to happen,” Imegwu said.
Meanwhile, former
chairman of PDP in Oyibo local government area, NnaEzu said the people of Oyibo
have passed a vote of confidence on Governor Rotimi Amaechi and the council
chairman, Felix Nweke following their developmental strides in the area.
“The governor has done
very well. The chairman of the local government has also done very well and that
has motivated the people of Oyibo to say that wherever our leaders are going we
are joining them there,” Ezu said.
