Hon. Evans Bipi Says he is new Speaker Rivers Assembly, blames Governor Rotimi Amaechi for the Crisis in the House

The new Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Hon. Evans Bipi, said 16 out of 25 Members sitted elected him as Speaker.

Evans stated that the purported sitting of the House under Hon. Otelemaba Amachree was belated.

“I am the new Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly. I have 5 as my trust members, but unknown to Otelemaba Amachree, some of them are for me. Not all the 27 are for him. Some are grieved. Some are not happy with the situation so they joined my 5 and voted for me. We are 25 in the hall and 16 voted for me. Already he has been impeached so there is no way he will convey a meeting, if he does, then it is medicine after death. He is trying to redeem his image because he has lost credibility,” Evans said in a telephone interview.

Evans Bipi who said he has no intentions to impeach Governor Amaechi, however, said he will do so if the circumstances demand so.
The Speaker also blamed Governor Amaechi for supervising the beating of some Members of the House.

“There is no way I will impeach the governor, but if it calls for it, I will impeach him. But I have no plans of impeaching the governor. His Excellency, Governor Rotimi Amaechi , personally supervised the beating of my colleagues. Such a wonderful governor to be involved in such act is so degrading and embarrassing. He has embarrassed all the Rivers people. How can a governor all the way from Government House come down to House of Assembly to supervise the beating of 5 members of the chamber. They are now lying in the hospitals, some in the clinic.”

PDP Members in Rivers State Engage in War Of Words

As the political face-off between Governor Rotimi Amaechi and Minister of State for Education, Nyesom Wike continues, loyalists have engaged in war of words.
A prominent supporter of Governor Rotimi Amaechi and Rivers state Commissioner for Agriculture, Emmanuel Chindah, described the recent comments made by PDP executives in Rivers state during a visit to President Goodluck Jonathan as shameful.

He said the visit to the president was a mis-used opportunity.
“They forgot to remind the president that our people are asking questions about the completion of the East-West road that has been killing a lot of people. They forgot to remind the government that our people are asking questions about the Eleme road which is impassable. As the rains are falling now you can’t go to Ogoni, you can’t go to Eleme or that part of the state and it is a federal government project.

“They forgot to remind the president that our people are asking questions about the Bonny-Bodo road which is a federal government project and has been lying there and the Bonny people are feeling that they will like to be going home by road just like Governor Amaechi has made it possible for the Opobo Nkoro people to go home by road, also for the Andoni people to begin to go home by road. They forgot to remind the president that our oil wells are going,” Chinda said.

Mixed reactions trail threats by Governor Chibuike Amaechi to dump PDP

Mixed reactions have been trailing threats by the Governor of Rivers State, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Amaechi to leave the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Chinyere Igwe, former member of the House of Representatives who spoke on the suspension of the governor of Rivers State, Chibuike Amaechi, from the Peoples Democratic Party and his threat of leaving the party, said that the party would lose nothing if the governor should leave.

He said the state would still win in 2015 with or without governor.

“Governor Amaechi as a party man, as a governor knows what is good for him. As a PDP member, you must live by the rules and regulations of the party. Where you refuse to do that that means you are choosing the alternative to leave. So nobody has asked him to leave, but if he leaves, PDP will still remain.

“PDP won’t die, so many have left the party in the past and still came back. This is not the first sitting governor that will leave a party. Many sitting governors have left, nothing unimaginable will happen, heaven will not fall,” Igwe said.

IPMAN Blames High Cost of Kerosene on Shut Down of Port Harcourt Refinery

The Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) said the continued shut down of the Port Harcourt refinery has led to the scarcity of kerosene in Rivers State.

The chairman of IPMAN, Sunny Npe, stated this at a press briefing in Port Harcourt.
He said its members now depend on imported kerosene for state consumption.

“At present, the price of kerosene is high because the refinery is not working and this will affect the lower class of the society. Once the refinery comes back on stream, automatically, the price of kerosene and diesel will drop.

In order to beef up the supply of PMS, we are sustaining supply by detention. And like you know, constant importation is going to have a huge negative impact on our foreign reserve. Meanwhile the refinery is in top shape,” Npe said.

He also said that if the illegal activities of vandals and oil bunkering are curtailed, the Port Harcourt refinery will produce more than 210, 000 barrels of crude oil per day.

“The allocated crude oil to the refinery cannot get to the refinery. At present the refinery is outrunning almost 60% installed capacity and after turn around maintenance, we expect it to go to a full production capacity of over 210,000 barrels of crude oil per day. That is substantially massive production that is going to take care of marketers, the consuming public and make life easy for the ordinary man,” he finished.

Environmental Rights Group call for immediate clean up of oil impacted sites in Ogoni

He said the oil spill which resulted in fire outbreak caused serious damage to the environment and the livelihood of the people of Bodo community who are mainly farmers and fishermen.

He said:
“We are requesting that there is a thorough clean up of the Bodo environment, but not just the Bodo environment or other spill-impacted site in Ogoni land, but across the Niger Delta region.
“We want, following the UNEP report and the recommendations of the UNEP report which are focused on Ogoni land, but we also want the oil companies and not only Shell SPDC to carry out proper clean up and remediation of spill impacted sites across the region.

High Court Orders Amaechi and PDP to Maintain Original Position of Affairs

A high court in Port Harcourt has ordered the chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Rivers state and Governor Rotimi Amaechi, to maintain the original position of affairs in the party over plans to carry over a performance valuation of public offices elected under the platform of the party.

Justice Godspower Guma of the Rivers state high court in his ruling ordered the parties in the matter to desist from taking further actions which could jeopardise the hearing of the suit instituted by Governor Amaechi, Senator Magnus Abe and the Chairman of Port Harcourt City Local Government Council.

Governor Amaechi’s lead counsel, Ifedianya Dedipe, said ruling of the court means that PDP should not go ahead with planned evaluation of performance of political office holders in the state elected under the platform.
“Nobody should do anything that will have the effect of tampering with the subject matter. In order words, our understanding is that they should not proceed with the question of setting up a committee to evaluate the performance in office of elected officials until the case is determined.”

Counsel to the PDP, Sammy Soniari, said they will challenge the jurisdiction of the court to hear the matter in the first place.

Shell Reacts over Allegation of Sabotaging Efforts of IPMAN

Shell Petroleum Development Company says it is not true that it sabotaged efforts of the Independent Petroleum Marketers in ensuring optimal performance of the petroleum refinery.

Spokesperson of Shell, Precious Okolobo, said this in reaction the report that Shell always took time to commence pumping of crude oil in the pipeline after repairs have been carried out.

Precious Okolobo in a telephone chat said Shell had maintained international standards in its processes. He also said activities of Shell aim at protecting environment of the host community.

“We go through this process to prevent that we do not pump crude oil into the environment. So if we conduct a repair, that is, a step by step process of commissioning and also resuming production across the pipeline, we need to test the pipelines and ensure that there is not leak and then advise stations to take off pumping of crude in a gradual manner. You don’t just open up all the stations at the same time, you need to start slowly and begin to build pressure along the line.”

Port Harcourt LGA Stakeholders Expresses Fear Of Economic Damage Over Political Crisis

Chimbiko
United and appointed office holders as well as stakeholders in Port Harcourt Local Government Area have expressed fears that the current political crisis may damage economic activities in the area.
The stakeholders in a communiqué at the end of a meeting in Port Harcourt also expressed concerns over renewed state of insecurity in the state.

The Mayor of Port Harcourt, Chimbiko Akarolo, read the communiqué and called for the redeployment of Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Mbu Joseph Mbu,.
“We condemn in very strong terms the unwarranted utterances by the state commissioner of Police, Mr Mbu Joseph Mbu, which in our view is an assault not only to the exalted office of the governor, the chief security officer of the state, but also to the peace and generality of the peace and loving people in Rivers state.

National Assembly Member Faults Comments By PDP Chieftain Over Power Rotation In Rivers State

A Member of the National Assembly, Ogbonna Nwoke, has faulted comments by a PDP Chieftain in Etchie, Emma Anyanwu, which insinuated that power rotation is not in the politics of the Peoples Democratic Party in Rivers state.

The lawmaker who represents Etchie Omuma Constituency in the House of Representative told newsmen in Port Harcourt that such comment shows that Emma Anyanwu has gone out of touch with the political realities.

“My senior brother, Prince Emma Anyanwu, has gradually become out of touch with the realities on ground. It is not true that in the Rivers state we have not had any form of power rotation. Even the constitution of this country recognises the need to rotate power. If you do not do that, it means that only the strong will have the ability to occupy office at the expense of the weak. And so it is not true,” he said.

Ogbonna Nwoke also said that stopping the rotation formula in politics in Rivers state will deny the politically weak areas access to political offices.
“…those who are saying so are invariably trying to exclude the rural people of ever contesting governorship election in Rivers state and that is what Governor Amaechi is trying to prevent.”
He also said calls by Prince Emma Anyanwu for senatorial slot to go to the people of Etchie have been settled.

ASSU says Government not Ready to Implement Agreement Reached by Both Parties

Academic Staff Union of Universities said the Federal Government is not ready to implement the positions of 2009 agreement between it and the union.
ASUU president, Dr. Nasir Isa Fagge, stated that the only two items of the agreement that have been implemented are the review of the retirement age of Professors from 65 to 70, and the reinstatement of prematurely dissolved Governing Councils.
“The other issue that mostly has to do with adequate funding for the system for revitalising of Nigerian Universities have not been met by government,” Fagge said.
He also explained that the government had not made any steps towards the fulfilling of the agreement until ASUU embarked on strike in 2012.
“On 2nd February 2012, the union decided to suspend that strike on the understanding that the Memorandum of Understanding that we signed with the government will be fully implemented within the shortest possible time,” he said.
