The Nigerian
military authorities and officials of the Rivers State Government are silent on
the withdrawal of soldiers from the Government House in Port Harcourt.
There
used to be up to 50 military personnel stationed at the Government House, but
none of them were seen around during the visit to the place today.
Attempts
to get explanations from the spokesman for the two brigade of the Nigerian Army,
Major Michael Etete, were unsuccessful as he claimed ignorant about the
development.
The Rivers
State Commissioner for Information, Ibim Semenitari, was also reluctant to
speak on the issue before travelling to Abuja.
However, some lawyers
who commented on the development said that the military had no business being
at the Government House in the first place. Others said there was more to the
withdrawal.
Meanwhile
reactions have continued to trail the crisis in Rivers state with the Trade
Union Congress TUC, condemning the Members of the House of Assembly for engaging
in fisticuffs.
President
General of the TUC, Bobo Ika Igama, and General Secretary, Musa Lawal, in a statement
lamented that while Nigerians were yet to recover from the shock of the
controversial election of the Nigeria Governors Forum NGF, the state lawmakers
openly engaged in a dishonourable show of shame.
TUC
leader said once again, the Rivers state lawmakers have proven that politics
was a lucrative business in Nigeria that is above their call to service.
