The Nigerian Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas
Workers (NUPENG) has suspended its 3-day warning strike.
Decision to suspend the strike was reached after a
meeting which ended in the early hours of today.
The meeting between delegation of NUPENG and federal
government agreed on several issues which led to the call for the strike in the
first place.
NUPENG’s publicity secretary, Bassey Harry, in a
telephone interview shortly after the strike was called off advised all members
to return to work.
“The 3 days warning strike has been suspended today
being the 3rd day and this is based on the intervention of the Federal Minister
of Labour through the minister, the GMD of NNPC and also calling for a
stakeholder emergency meeting which held today. Based on this, the warning
strike has been suspended. All NUPENG workers should go back to work and there
should be no abstention from any of the company management and therefore we
direct all our members to resume duty. Further information will be communicated
to them.”
Bassey also said that the minister of labour has
promised to address all anti labour practices in the oil multi nationals.
“on Shell, the minister has also promised at the
stakeholders meeting today that Shell will be invited to make sure that the
anti labour practices in Shell will is
addressed including, Chevron and also
Agip. Based on this offer and promise by the minister, we have to suspend the
action.”
