Not less than
eighty shops have been affected by a fire incidence that took place at the New
Layout Market Borokiri, in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital.
The Chairman of
the New Layout Market, Robinson Jack, who confirmed this, said that over eighty
stores were affected by a fire inside that occurred at the market on Tuesday
evening.
Mr. Jack told
newsmen that the fire which started around 6:30 pm affected two blocks in the
market and destroyed goods worth millions of naira.
He said the fire
lasted about two hours and was finally brought under control by men of the fire
service.
Robinson said
the cause of the fire was yet unknown but that some security guards who were on
duty noted that the fire started shortly after power suppply was restored in the
market.
He also made a
call to the state government and all concerned Nigerians to come to the rescue
of those affected.
The State
Commissioner for Special Duties, Dickson Umunakwe, as at the time of filing
this report was yet to reply to calls made to him concerning the fire
incidence.
