Leaders
of Okrika Local Government Area have banned political rallies in their area
following the incessant political crisis in their land that eventually led to
the death of a policeman recently.
Spokesman
of the leaders, Mathew Amabebe, who made this known to newsmen at the end of
their town hall meeting, also used the medium to commiserate with the police
officer who lost his life during an All Progressives Congress (APC)
governorship rally in the area on February 17.
“The
whole town commiserates with the family of the policeman who died. Because of
what has happened, there should be no rally until further notice because of the
violent attitude of the parties.”
“Also,
while parties are free to talk on issues, they should refrain from insulting
personalities and institutions,” Amabebe said.
On
his part, a former leader of Niger Delta militants, Ateke Tom said he is in
support of the decision of the entire Okrikans that no political rally should
take place in their land, no matter the party involved.
He
said the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has done its governorship rally in
Okrika as well as the APC.
“The
problem that engulfed that of the APC is what the people of Okrika do not want
any more. When my town has spoken, I have spoken. APC and PDP, no rally in
Okrika,” Tom said.
