A
team of policemen have arrived Okrika and Ogu/Bolo Local Government Areas of
Rivers State in search of illegal arms and ammunition from hoodlums.
The
policemen, who arrived on Tuesday, said they were in the state to conduct a stop
and search operation in the areas among other security objectives.
Assistant
Inspector General of Police (AIG) in charge of Zone 6 Calabar, Tunde Ogunsakin,
told newsmen at a press conference in Port Harcourt, that the force was ready
to clampdown on anybody found with illegal weapons.
Ogunsakin
said he heard information that illegal weapons were going round in Okrika and
Ogu/Bolo Local Government Areas.
He
said: “Part of the measures we have put in place is stop and search point in
strategic areas in Okrika and Ogu/Bolo Local Government Areas. We are looking
for arms and ammunition that are in very wrong hands. So, we are carrying out
this search in peace. We heard information that these things (arms) are going
on and people are taking them around.
“I
can tell you that the police is on top of the situation. We will clampdown on
those who are with illegal arms,” Ogunsakin said.
While
meeting with relevant stakeholders in the areas, Ogunsakin said the essence was
to ensure that all live in peace in their communities.
“What
we did this morning was to call all the stakeholders which include: religious leaders,
political party members, all the elders of Ogu/Bolo and Okrika. They all came
here this morning and we discussed on how to ensure that the communities live
in peace among themselves as well as to carry out their politicking in a
peaceful manner,” he added.
