About twelve people are feared dead after their boat capsized on the Bonny Sea. The covered boat was reportedly travelling from Bonny to Port Harcourt when it capsized.
The Youth Leader of Bonny Kingdom, Simon Wilcox, told newsmen that the boat was conveying about 38 passengers and was overload.
“At
about 7.30am the boat departed Bonny. It was leaving from Bonny - Port
Harcourt when just two minutes after leaving the jetty, the boat
capsized. A boat that was supposed to carry about 26 persons carried
about 38 persons. There is no form of regulation. Not from government,
not from union.
“The
boat capsized and about 12 people died, including a woman with her two
children, they are lying at the ground of the mortuary lifeless”, he
said.
He said the swift intervention of the sea Transport Workers led to the rescue of some of the passengers.
“Majority
of the victims survived, thanks to the swift response of the boat union
officials. They rescued about 10 people”, he said.
