Felix Obuah |
The recent court ruling in Abuja which
declared Felix Obuah as the new Rivers State Chairman of Peoples’ Democratic
Party (PDP) is one that the members of Rivers State Chapter of Association of
Local Government of Nigeria (ALGON) has rejected, saying that he was imposed on
them and not democratically elected as the immediate former Chairman of the
party, Chief G.U. Ake.
This was made known by members of the
executive of ALGON led by its Chairman, Hon. Chimbiko Akarolo, Mayor of Port
Harcourt City Local Government Council, during a press briefing in Port
Harcourt.
In a release signed by Hon. Chimbiko
Akarolo, Barr. Edward Pepple, and Hon. Ojukaye Flagg-Amachree, on behalf of
ALGON, Rivers State, stated that “the sack of the duly-elected State executive
Council of PDP and the subsequent illegal swearing-in of a group that never
contested elections as the new executive members, is the climax of a grand plot
calculated and orchestrated by a group of individuals to cause a breakdown of
law and order in the State”.
Chimbiko said that the judgement was
meant to disrupt the peace and harmony the PDP Rivers State Chapter has
enjoined all the while.
“The judiciary has been the hope of the
common man, it is embarrassing that despite the validation of the election of
the Chief G.U.Ake led executive in the State, the judiciary still went ahead to
give a contrary judgement on the same matter just to cause disorder in the
State.”
The court decision according to Hon.
Akarolo said ALGON has made the party to declare that they will not accept any
illegal executive foisted upon them adding that they will not support,
recognize or do business with any other State executive council of the PDP
except the one duly elected by the party delegate.
The Chairman, however appealed to their
teeming supporters and party faithful to remain law abiding and go about their
normal business as the “indefensible judgment” has already been appealed
against at the Court of Appeal.
It will be recalled that the earlier
judgment that confirmed the Chief G.U. Ake led executive council as the
legitimate and duly elected State executive council of PDP in the State is
still subsisting.
In a vote of thanks, Hon. Maureen
Tamuno, Chairman of Ogu/Bolo Local Government Area said that “journalists are
seen to be telling the truth and that
they should tell the truth of the matter.”
According to her, “the judiciary is the
hope for the Rivers common man, but with what we saw the day before yesterday,
we need to do a rethink. We have always relied on the media in Rivers State by
reporting what you have seen and what you have heard.”
She urged the
media men to “report the truth and let the truth be told,” she finished.
