Rivers State Governor, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi gave a grant of One Hundred Million Naira to Ogu/Bolo Local Government Council to augment steps taken by the council on developmental projects, including the linking of Bolo Town to the national grid aimed at boosting social and economic activities in the area.
Amaechi made the announcement recently while having his ‘Meet the People’
tour of local governments at the Town Hall located at the Headquarter of the
LGA.
Addressing the people of the LG, the Governor said, “Your chairman
has done well in the area of power, so we will support her with a N100 million
grant, because the Ogu/Bolo council has taken on the rural electrification
project which is also our priority project in the area of power. It is your
entitlement, we hold the money for Rivers people and before June this year, we
will bring out the money and mobilize contractors to site.” Click on read more below to continue reading...
He also asked the people of the LG to provide 21 hectares of land
for erection of a model school.
“I also want the Commissioner for Education to bring me the survey
plan to ensure we have 21 hectares of land and we handle as government project,
so ignore who owns the land. Let us get 21 hectares of land as this will not
only benefit Ogu/Bolo people that will go to school there, but the entire
Rivers State”, he added.
Amaechi also reinstated his administration’s commitment to
employing 13,000 teachers that would be trained and deployed to primary and
secondary schools across the state.
Amaechi gave the people of the LGA the assurance that he would build
more health centres for the various communities in the area to help in
combating health related challenges they might have.
“We will provide more
health centres at Ogu, Wakama, Bolo and Ele communities because the people are
surrounded by water. If a woman wants to deliver at midnight, where will she go
to? You can’t say Bolo is close to Okrika or Wakama. So, we have decided to let
the different communities have their health centres”, Governor Amaechi said.
He mentioned that his administration had completed the road
project linking Ogu main town, the Bolo road and bridge project.
Gov. Amaechi following a demand by the people of Ogu/Bolo to help
them combact crime, promised to also build a Police Station in the area.
Chairman of Ogu/Bolo Local Government Council, Dame Maureen Tamuno,
in reaction, called on all well meaning Nigerians to join the council in
commending the leadership of Governor Amaechi which she said has impacted not
only on Rivers State but the nation at large.
“The people of Ogu/bolo
are very proud of you and as Governor of Rivers State you have not only brought
true transformation and development we can see, but you have also rekindled the
hope of the common man”, She said.
In another development
during one of his ‘Meet the People’ tour, the Governor reemphasised his persistence
in tackling crime rate and bringing it to its barest minimum in Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni
Local Government Area and every other part of the state.
He said he made the
remark as a result of the high rate of insecurity and Kidnapping that has
become a thing of worry to the communities in the local government, adding that
he was on oath to protect the lives and properties of the Rivers people.
“The only responsibility
in the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria that the governor has is
the responsibility he swears to on oath- 'I will secure lives and
properties'. That is my responsibility to you. I promise you as I stand
that I will continue to do that, to protect lives and property. We will
continue to give all the necessary support to security agencies to restore law
and order in ONELGA,” Amaechi assured.
He pointed out that the
Police would need to play their roles effectively because it is their main
service to the nation.
“You know, there are two angles to this. One angle is me, I
will give my necessary support but the police must also be ready to do their
work. We believe that the new Police Commissioner is equipped like the
former one to deal with the situation. But before you boo at your
chairman, know that he does not have powers to arrest the situation, only the
police can. In fact, it is the federal government responsibility to secure us
but we as governors must work with our Commissioners of Police to ensure that
you are secure. Please give us just one month to sit down and arrest the
situation”, he said.
Amaechi also said that his administration has completed five
primary health care centres in the Local Government with the sixth one under
construction at Akabuka.
“You know, I promised to tell you the truth all the time. So
here, out of six, five of the primary healthcare centres: Ase Azagah, Omoku,
Mgbede, Okwuzi and Ebocha are completed and in use, and that is 90 per cent of
our promise completed,” he elucidated.
He assured that his administration would complete ongoing road
projects in the local government and reconstruct internal roads and drainage in
the council headquarters, Omoku.
On education, Amaechi said that funds had been disbursed to the
State Ministry of Education to complete all model primary schools under
construction in the local government.
“We assume that 60 per cent of the primary schools we started in
Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area are yet to be completed and what we
have done, I can tell you, is that we have released money to Commissioner for
Education to start the completion of all primary schools we have not completed
so that Omoku and all those areas will benefit. Also remember that the
childrena re not to pay a dime to the schools because the free education system
extends to them,” he said.
He mentioned the completed model primary schools in the LG as Community
Primary School Ndoni, Community School Obiede-Erema, State School Obrikom, St.
Stephens Primary School, Omoku, amongst others.
He also said that his administration had awarded 118 students scholarships
that are from the LG to study in universities abroad.
He also promised to build a model secondary school in the Local
Government once the land was provided, while urging the youths in the council
to be disciplined and channel their energy at achieving positive result that
would benefit both their families and the community at large.
Reacting, Chairman of the Local Government Area, Hon. Raymond Wokocha,
commended the Governor on his developmental strides.
“Your Excellency’s vision of periodically fraternizing
with the people of Rivers State aimed at acquainting the people with the
policies and programmes of Government, as well as identifying their pressing
needs is highly appreciated. Holding wider consultation, identifying
the plight of the people and responding swiftly to them are the hallmark of
sound democratic practice,” Wokocha said.
In his speech, he said that the projects which Ameachi’s
administration embarked on were outstanding, “Your Excellency Sir, there is
no gainsaying the fact that you have recorded an indelible mark on the sands
of time in terms of your giant development strides in the state. These
various projects, ranging from model secondary schools, primary schools, health
centres, roads etc. are all located throughout the length and breadth of the
state. While most of these projects have been delivered, some of them are at
various stages of completion. A good number of scholarship awards have been
given to our students both at the under and post graduate level, within and
outside Nigeria. Above all, your swift intervention in the various
crises that threatened the corporate existence of our area averted an
impending breakdown of law and order that was cleverly masterminded by some
social miscreants”.
