94 years old former president of South
Africa and the anti-apartheid leader, Nelson Mandela, was admitted into the
hospital on the wee hours of Wednesday morning, following a recurring lung
infection.
He has become increasingly frail in
recent years which has led to his being hopitalised over and over again.
This time around, he was hospitalised
"due to the recurrence of his lung infection," the office of present President
of the country, Jacob Zuma, said in a statement.
The statement however assured all
that the best doctors were attending to him and ensuring that he has the best
possible expert medical treatment and comfort.
"We appeal to the people of
South Africa and the world to pray for our beloved Madiba (his fond name for
Nelson), and his family and to keep them in their thoughts. We have full
confidence in the medical team and know that they will do everything possible
to ensure recovery," the presidential statement quoted Zuma as saying.
In December last year, Mandela spent
three weeks in a hospital in the South African capital of Pretoria, where he
was treated for a lung infection and had a procedure to remove gallstones.
Wishing him a quick and good
recovery.
