In the bid to
stabilise and improve on power supply in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, the
Commissioner for Power, Hon. Augustine Wokocha, said that State Government has
commenced work in replacing burnt out transformers in the state’s capital.
Wokocha made mention
of this at the Trans-Amadi Gas Turbine Station while handing over 25 unit of
500 KVA distribution transformers to the management of the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company, (PHEDC) for the replacement of burnt out
transformers in the State on Friday, 22nd, March.
“As part of our
scheme in power stabilization, we have noticed that some zones in the
communities have either burnt out or over loaded transformers, and as part of
our project, we have provided 280 transformers to be installed in the city as
relief or replacement,” Hon. Wokocha said.
Rivers
State Government had earlier embarked on the construction of Injection
Sub-Stations across the State to support PHCN’s facility in the distribution of
power.
The
Project Coordinator of the Power Distribution Committee, Engr. Ema Gbole
Wikina, reaffirmed what Hon. Wokocha.
‘‘We
realized that the full import of this power development will not be felt
because in the existing PHCN system there are areas that do not have power as a
result of burnt out transformers, this exercise is to replace such transformers
so that the full benefit of this power development project will be felt where
it matters the most which is in homes of people,” he said.
Also
speaking, the Acting General Manager Technical of the PHEDC, Engr. Vitus Duru,
who received the transformers on behalf of his company commended the State
Government’s effort in the area of power distribution.
Engr.
Duru said, “I am grateful to the State Government for building these injection
sub-station of which some have being completed, commissioned and handed over to
us. It is only through this kind of
exercise that the consumers will know that the Government is indeed
working. We will pick up these
transformers and place them where necessary”.
