‘New Rivers State University Of Science And Technology Underway’ – Gov. Amaechi

Governor of Rivers State, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, has made clear his intentions to construct a new Rivers State University of Science and Technology (RSUST) at the Greater Port Harcourt City in May this year.

The governor made this open on Saturday, 27th April, during the 25th Convocation Ceremony of the University in Port Harcourt.

“We have finished with the due process and we will start building the infrastructures and various faculties of the University.  The construction of the new RSUST will start soon,” Amaechi said.

In a bid to avoid clash with Academic Staff Student Union (ASSU), Amaechi said he will meet with the union before embarking on the amendment of the law setting up the new Rivers State University of Science and Technology.

Sad: 9 Jambites Lose their Lives along Aba-Port Harcourt Expressway Accident

Another horrific accident occurred at Aba-Port Harcourt expressway on Friday when a driver conveying 15 young Jambites (JAMB Candidates) who were on their way to write the University pre-entrance examination on Saturday 27th.

The bus was said to have rammed into a stationary truck, ending the lives of 9 out of the 15 passengers on the spot.
The others were rushed to the hospital, the other 6 which excludes the driver and conductor that are among the ones that died instantly are now battling for their lives.

Rivers Vocational Training Centre Taken Over By German Company

Rivers State Government has handed over the Vocational Training Centre at Port Harcourt Primary School for skill acquisition to ZWH German Chambers of Crafts and the regional chambers of crafts for a six year contract period.

The state Commissioner for Education, Dame Lawrence Alice Nemi, made this known during the signing of the Vocation Training Agreement before the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Barrister Wogu Boms, in his office in Port Harcourt last weekend.

Dame Alice said that the project is part of the economic reform agenda of Governor Amaechi to create employment opportunity for Rivers people.

She explained further that, the state government is desirous of collaborating with the private sector in improving the vocational Skill and competence of Rivers people, towards empowering them vocationally in order to make them self employed and employable by employers of labour in the state.

Mile 3 Traders Cry Out to Government to Save them from Flood

Traders at Mile 3 Market in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, have called on government to run to their rescue to save them from imminent flooding of their shops.

Speaking to some of the traders at the market, Margeret Ihunwo, a fish seller, she said that they have been battling with flooding every time it rains heavily, leaving their market goods in danger.

“We were happy with the roads that the governor built which has benefitted us, but our fear now is that that happiness might soon turn to regret because every time it rains, the drainage gets filled and there is no way for the water to pass but to enter our shops,” she said.

Agitation Intensifies as Female Commissioners, Law Makers and Women Join in the Fight Against New Rivers PDP Chairman

Since the court declaration and installation of a new Rivers State Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) Chairman, Felix Obuah, over the alleged democratically elected former chairman, G.U. Ake, majority of the party members have been restive.

Association of Local Government of Nigeria (ALGON) Rivers chapter, had made it clear that they would not work with the new chairman and as if that was not enough, prominent women in the state have followed suit.

Women from all works of life; Commissioners, Law makers and others dressed in black gathered recently at the State House of Assembly complex to pray for peace and stability in the State.

They were protesting for what they declared as injustice by ‘Abuja political brothers’ who conspired with a High Court in Abuja to dethrone Chief G.U. Ake as the state’s PDP chairman.

Rivers State Commissioner for Information and Communications, Mrs. Ibim Semenitari, addressing the women said, “The reason why women are in black today is because the women are declaring to the Lord that they are sober and in worship, it is also a symbolism of humility before God that the truth alone would prevail in our land.

Rivers ALGON Says It Will Not Work With Felix Obuah,New PDP Chairman

The recent court ruling in Abuja which declared Felix Obuah as the new Rivers State Chairman of Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) is one that the members of Rivers State Chapter of Association of Local Government of Nigeria (ALGON) has rejected, saying that he was imposed on them and not democratically elected as the immediate former Chairman of the party, Chief G.U. Ake.

This was made known by members of the executive of ALGON led by its Chairman, Hon. Chimbiko Akarolo, Mayor of Port Harcourt City Local Government Council, during a press briefing in Port Harcourt.

In a release signed by Hon. Chimbiko Akarolo, Barr. Edward Pepple, and Hon. Ojukaye Flagg-Amachree, on behalf of ALGON, Rivers State, stated that “the sack of the duly-elected State executive Council of PDP and the subsequent illegal swearing-in of a group that never contested elections as the new executive members, is the climax of a grand plot calculated and orchestrated by a group of individuals to cause a breakdown of law and order in the State”.

Some people are so ruthless and heartless. This case was all over the air last year and it was about a young lady raped by 4 guys in Bonny Island of Rivers State and after which, buried alive so that there would be no way to trace their evil deed.
But luck was against them and the Joint Task Force (JTF) got the hint and apprehended the men and forced them to take them to the site of the burial and to exhume the body.

What gives me the shivers is that the body of the girl is still fresh and not stiff.
It means that it was not long ago that they buried the girl.

Imo State Gov Sustained Only Head Injuries In The Car Accident Yesterday

People have been worried about the health status of the Governor of Imo State, Rochas Okorocha, after been involved in an auto accident yesterday, Friday 19th April, 2013, at Owerri.

He was on his way to inspect projects when a Mercedes Saloon car ran into his convoy with the vehicle he was inside affected.

But the governor has said that he is in good health condition and only a minor head injury which his , Personal Physician to Okorocha, Dr Sylvester Igwe, also confirmed.

Sokoto State Deputy Governor’s second son, Luqman Mukthar Shagari, yesterday, Thursday 18th April, with his friend simply identified as Ghadaffi (seated on the passenger’s side) and one other of their friend where returning home to Sokoto from their base in Abuja when all of a sudden, Luqman, who was at the wheel lost control of the vehicle which led to the vehicle tumbling severally and bursting into flames afterwards.

Luqman and his friend on the passenger’s side died instantly but the other of their friend who was at the back survived but not without injuries.

Musician Jaywon’s Car In A Ghastly Accident

Woman Kills Husband and Sets His Body on Fire (Picture)

This is another weird story of a woman accused of killing the husband. And as if that was not enough, she burnt the body also. 

What could make someone do that is beyond my comprehension. 

The Woman above, Esther Peter (pictured by the side), on Tuesday April 16th allegedly killed her husband, Kenneth Peter Anayo, then set his body on fire at their home at NEPA Phase I Road, Ijagemo, around the Ikotun area of Lagos. 

Their neighbours said the couple was always fighting in public and in fact there was a serious fight between them a few days before the Tuesday incident, where Esther stabbed her husband with a broken bottle and he had to be treated at the hospital. 

Neighbours said they noticed that Esther and Peter's room was on fire around 2am that Tuesday morning and when they went there to help, they noticed that the room was locked from the outside. They managed to break down the door, and that was when they saw the burnt remains of Kenneth. Esther and her son were nowhere to be found.

Esther was later found around the area with her belongings in a bag trying to escape. Neighbours handed her over to the police from the Isheri-Oshun division, who later came to remove Kenneth's remains.

Esther, who is from Cross River told police that the fire was caused by the candle lit in their room while she went to fetch water but couldn't explain why the door was locked from the outside and why she had all belongings in a bag. Police say they have every reason to believe Kenneth was killed being burnt.

The case is being handled by the State Criminal Investigation Department, SCID, Panti, Yaba, Lagos.

Egi Professionals Threaten Showdown With Total Over Unemployment

Skilled workers and artisans of Egi origin under the umbrella  of Egi Association of Skilled Professionals (E.A.S.P) in Egi clan of Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni local government area of Rivers state have decried their frequent denial of employment opportunities by the French Multinational, Total Exploration and Production, Nigeria Limited (TEPNL) and its contracting firms operating in Egi  land. 

To this end, the association has issued a 9-point charter of demands to Total as part of measures to redress the anomalous situation.

In a press statement issued in Port Harcourt and jointly signed by the president of the association, Comrade Ejike G. Ojum, the secretary, Comrade Promise Ikeagwu and the Public Relations Officer, Comrade Dickson Ikezi, the workers called on the management of Total E & P Nigeria Limited to commence immediate negotiation with the association in order to address their demands.

The association also threatened a show down with Total if the option of dialogue is not explored in the shortest possible time.  The statement read inter alia, “The Egi Association of Skilled Professionals does not believe in protests and confrontation to press home their demands.  However, we wish to state categorically that these options will be explored in the shortest possible time if the parties involved do not see the need for dialogue and peaceful resolution of our demands.  A stitch in time, they say, saves nine.”

Akpabio Blasts Amaechi Over NGF Chairmanship … Says Amaechi Planned Self Imposition

Chairman of the PDP Governors Forum and Governor of Akwa Ibom state, Chief Godswill Akpabio, has berated Gov. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers state over what he alleged was Amaechi’s attempt to impose himself as chairman of Nigeria Governors Forum for second term.

Speaking in a television interview over the weekend, Gov. Akpabio said the move by Gov. Amaechi is contrary to the constitution that guides the forum, saying that members objected to the attempt by Gov. Amaechi to seek re-election as chairman of NGF.

According to Gov. Akpabio, the forum agreed that the chairmanship of NGF will only be for one tenure. Gov. Akpabio disclosed that in a bid to seek for re-election, the pro-Amaechi group amended the constitution of the forum to suit the purpose, which other members of the forum objected because the move is not in tandem with the constitution that set up the forum.  

He said the governors’ agreement at the onset of the NGF was that the chairman would serve for only one term so that there won’t be acrimony amongst the governors “The southern part will do two years and the northern part will do two years for equity” Akpabio said.

The cold war between the Rivers State Governor, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Amaechi and his former chief of staff and current Minister of State for Education, Barr. Nyesom Wike has dealt a blow to the support and loyalty of party faithfuls in the local government areas of the state. 

The latest casualty is the Tai local government area, as a former local government chairman and incumbent federal lawmaker representing Oyigbo/Tai/Eleme constituency in the Federal House of Representatives, Hon. Barry Mpigi threw decorum to the winds and freely engaged. Dr. Jacobson Mbina, a one time chairman of Tai local government area and currently a lecturer with the University of Port Harcourt, in a physical combat over $10,000 dollars allegedly doled out to them by the honourable minister.

 A competent source said that it all began in February, this year when Hon. Barry Mpigi led a delegation of Tai political top notchers on a solidarity visit to the Minister of State for Education, Barr Nyesom Wike in Abuja.  In the delegation were Chief Monday Ngbor and Dr. Jacobson Mbina, all political heavyweights and professed loyalists of Governor Chibuike Amaechi.

‘Fight Against Malaria Will Be Sustained’- Amaechi

The Rivers State Governor, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi has expressed his administration’s determination to unrelentingly tackle and ultimately eradicate malaria from the state.

The governor said this during the first ECOWAS Town Hall meeting on malaria elimination and ground breaking ceremony of a Biolarvicide factory in the state at the Alfred Diette Spiff Civic Centre, Port Harcourt, late last week.

He said the state would partner with the Federal Ministry of Health, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and foreign organisations to eliminate the disease.

“We must invest in biolarvicides, we must go with the Federal Ministry of Health, the ECOWAS Commission and the Cubans to invest in the biolarvicides. We must also invest in indoor spraying. Since we have the target of 2015, we must ensure that by the end of next year, we will either eradicate malaria or reduce it to its barest,” Amaechi said.
