Rivers Assembly Upholds Appointment of Wejinya As Headmistress of Sea Shell Model Primary School

Rivers State house of assembly on Monday, 4th February 2013, adopted the recommendations of the report of House Committee on Public Complaints and Petition concerning the petition brought before the House on Anomalies in the appointment of Head Teacher and Deputy Head Teacher at Sea Shell Model Primary School Port Harcourt.

The recommendation of the report of the Committee which read ‘That the appointment of Wejinya Tamunoala Clara as Headmistress of Sea Shell Model Primary School be upheld because it followed due process’ was adopted by the deputy Speaker, Leyii Kwanee, after he divided the House.

The petition which was sponsored by Mrs. Ayite E. Kalama stated that the position of Headmistress of the aforementioned school which was supposed to be given to her by virtue of her qualifications was given to a junior staff of grade 11.

She further said that the new appointed headmistress in question, Wejinya Tamunoala Clara, did not partake in the written interview for the position.

The report of the House Committee showed with evidences that Wejinya scored the highest point in the interview with 81% in addition to a Masters degree in Educational Management, while Ayite scored 60%.

They also mentioned in their findings that the old policy of succession to headship using just salary grade level and years of experience by the then college of Education was superseded by the introduction of Appointment based on a competitive interview process having regard to performance, qualification and experience.

The report also stated that an advert was for the position and that Wejinya met all the requirements.
