Former Deputy Governor
of Rivers State, Sir Gabriel Toby, has called on government at all levels,
especially the Local Governments to be more prudent in managing their finance.
Toby made this
call on Tuesday, 26th, at Opobo while speaking during a special Stakeholders
Meeting organised by Opobo/Nkoro Local Government Council of Rivers State.
He described a
situation where a Government spend good chunk of its allocation on overhead
with little or nothing left to embark on developmental projects as ineffective.
According to
Toby, Federal, State and Local Government should have enough savings from their
allocations and internally generated revenue to put up projects that will
better the lives of the people.
He was however
pleased with the developmental strides of the Council Chairman, Hon. Maclean
Bethel Uranta, while calling on him to exercise his power to generate revenue
internally.
Sir
Toby also called on the people of the LGA to pay for some of the services
provided by the council saying that development and urbanization can only be
realised when all the stakeholders are willing and ready to make the necessary
sacrifices and commitment. Click on read more below to continue reading...
Complimenting the Council Chairman, Rivers State House of Assembly Member representing the council, Hon. Andrew A. Miller, commended his efforts in providing quality service to the people: urging him not to be distracted.
Hon. Uranta had
earlier in his welcome address enumerated the achievements of his
administration, saying that the essence of the special stakeholders meeting was
to afford the people an ‘opportunity to know what government has done and get a
feedback from the people to keep the Government on the right track.’
The meeting had
in attendance, different political and Social Interest Groups, Technocrats,
Students and Youth Groups, traditional Rulers, Women Groups and other
Stakeholders in the area.
