The Rivers State Government has declared its support
for the conduct of Local Government Council elections in 22 out of 23 local government
areas of the state come May 23.
A statement issued by the State Commissioner of
Information and Communication, Ibim Semenitari said the timing of the elections
meets with the provisions of Rivers State Local Government and Electoral
Commission Law.
They said the plan and election was also consistent
with Governor Chibuike Amaechi’s declaration that local government elections
would hold after the 2015 general elections.
Semenitari said it would be mischievous for anyone
to insinuate that the state government pressured the state electoral commission
to choose the time of the election.
The state government warned those threatening to
unleash violence on innocent Rivers people following the council election that
state and local governments as well as internatonal bodied are watching.
