The Trade Union Congress, (TUC), Rivers State
chapter, has advocated for a law to try people who suspected of amassing wealth
they cannot explain its source.
Chairman of the TUC in Rivers State, Chika Onuegbu,
said TUC wants the law to come to effect when Muhammadu Buhari takes over
power.
“The offence of unexplained wealth also called possession
of unexplained wealth will penalise people for possessing wealth disproportionate
to their own lawful sources of income if they cannot provide the satisfactory explanation
of the wealth. It has been recognised as one of the best practises to combat corruption.
Also in Hong Kong where it has existed
for nearly 40 years, the court of appeal has proved its effectiveness against
corruption, and moreover the United Nations convention against corruption also
encourages the establishment of such an offence,” Onuegbu said.
He also called on the president-elect, Buhari, to
look into ways of stopping wastage of public funds by those in government.
I will like that law very well. When is it coming please?
